Patrick Mahomes once had an unexpected visitor in the Kansas City Chiefs locker room, as Tom Brady came to offer him some words of wisdom after an AFC Championship game

Tom Brady and Patrick Mahomes could meet for the final time on Sunday night, as the Kansas City Chiefs head to Tampa Bay to face the Buccaneers.

It’s been back-to-back heavyweight clashes for Brady after facing Aaron Rodgers last week, and the Green Bay Packers ended their unbeaten start to the season. But it’s now time for Brady to face the quarterback tipped to follow in his footsteps, and the pair already have some history.

Brady and Mahomes have faced each other five times, with the veteran edging the contest 3-2 after winning the 2021 Super Bowl against the Chiefs. But Brady once paid Mahomes a secret visit after winning the AFC Championship game in 2018, and let the young Chiefs QB know that he would have a lot more success come his way.

The last two meetings between Brady and Mahomes have been epic, with the seven-time Super Bowl winner edging Mahomes in the Championship game, and the grand final itself. Should this be Brady’s last season, Mahomes will have one more shot at equalling their record to 3-3, and if he’s listened to the advice given to him back in 2018, he just might.

After the New England Patriots beat the Chiefs in the AFC final back in 2018, Brady went to the Chiefs’ locker room to speak to Mahomes. It’s never been revealed specifically what Brady said to Mahomes, but the Chiefs QB recalled the incident, and said: “Yeah, it kind of just reemphasised that I was doing things the right way.

“That I was putting in the right work, and that I would have more opportunities to be in these games.” And Brady was spot on, as Mahomes added: “I’ve been lucky enough to be in two more of them since and win both of those.”

Chiefs head coach Andy Reid also opened up on the incident, as he said via Charles Goldman of USA Today : “Well, I would say it was unique. I mean he didn’t have to do that.

Mahomes has a lot of respect for Brady

“He is arguably the best quarterback to ever play the game, and he surely didn’t have to come over and say a word. But he did that, and I think for a young quarterback to have somebody of his stature do that, I think was a tremendous gesture, and it was heartfelt.

“He didn’t have to do it, and he wasn’t putting on a show. There was nobody there to really see it, so it was really just his respect for Pat and, in return, Pat’s respect for him.”

Both Mahomes and Brady will be looking to bounce back from a difficult week three, as both sides saw their unbeaten streak come to an end. While the Buccaneers lost to the Packers, the Chiefs were beaten 20-17 by the Indianapolis Colts.

The Chiefs led at half-time, but a bust-up between Mahomes and their offensive coordinator caused tension. They only scored three points in the second half, although it’s likely that they’ve put it behind them this week.
