Tom Cruise, the enduring Hollywood action star, was spotted touching down in London via chopper this Friday. The longtime heartthrob, who will be celebrating his 60th birthday on Sunday, showed off his still toned arms in a clinging grey t-shirt. At the moment he is enjoying the thunderous success of his latest release Top Gun: Maverick, the long-awaited sequel to the 1986 dogfight classic.
Tom appeared in bright spirits upon his arrival in London, grinning as he chatted with ground crew after emerging from the helicopter. He stuck to a casually stylish ensemble of a grey top and tight black trousers, rounding off the look with low-top leather boots.
During his latest trip, he was spotted with his agent Maha Dakhil in the star-studded audience of an Adele concert in Hyde Park on Friday. Tom was seen stopping to chitchat with fans and pose for selfies while Maha hung back and beamed at her client.
Reports circulated last year that the Scientologist icon was involved with actress Hayley Atwell, who stars with him in the upcoming Mission: Impossible movie. However last month rumors flew that Tom had split from Hayley for a second time, bringing the curtain down on what was said to be an on-off romance. A recent report in The Sun claimed she is involved with music producer Ned Wolfgang Kelly.
Meanwhile Tom has a total of three ex-wives – Mimi Rogers, Nicole Kidman, and Katie Holmes. His movie with Hayley has been subjected to repeated delays on account of the coronavirus pandemic and is now slated for a summer release in 2024. In the run-up to his 60th birthday, Tom has made precious few concessions to his age, continuing to star in a string of action movies.
During a recent press conference at Cannes when he was asked why he still does his own stunts, he retorted: ‘Would you ask Gene Kelly why he does all his own dancing?’ At the moment he is basking in the triumph of Top Gun: Maverick, which became only the second movie to make over $1 billion since the pandemic took off.
The movie is also the highest-grossing of Tom’s career, and the first of his films to achieve the $1 billion mark at the global box office. Tom features amid a cast of newer sex symbols like Miles Teller and Glen Powell, but the film also briefly reunites him with Val Kilmer, who played his rival in the original.
One of the subplots involves his character reigniting his romance with an old flame played by Jennifer Connelly, who in real life was 15 when the first film came out. Tom’s female co-stars from the original movie, Kelly McGillis and Meg Ryan, were not hired back to act in the sequel.
Back in 2019 Kelly, who got sober and withdrew from Hollywood years ago, candidly discussed not being asked back for Top Gun: Maverick. ‘I’m old and I’m fat and I look age-appropriate for what my age is, and that is not what that whole scene is about,’ she remarked to Entertainment Tonight.
